  6. Should I choose Bandipur or Nagarhole?

Bandipur and Nagarhole sit side by side, separated only by the Kabini reservoir. Together with Mudumalai and Wayanad, they form the largest contiguous forest in India. Deciding between them comes down to vegetation, safari types, and travel logistics.

Does Bandipur or Nagarhole have better visibility?

Bandipur offers better visibility due to its dry deciduous forests.

The thinner vegetation in Bandipur makes spotting tigers and leopards easier. This is especially true between March and May when the dry summer reduces foliage. Nagarhole has thicker, denser forests, which changes the viewing experience.

Where can I do a boat safari?

Nagarhole offers boat safaris on the Kabini River side.

The Kabini backwaters form the northern boundary separating the two parks. Bandipur offers official jeep and bus safaris on land. You must go to the Nagarhole side to take a boat safari. This provides a unique way to view Asian elephants gathering at the water's edge.

Which park is easier to reach from Bangalore?

Bandipur is highly accessible because the Mysuru-Ooty highway passes directly through it.

It takes 4 to 5 hours to drive the 220 kilometers from Bangalore to Bandipur. State-run buses pass straight through the park and can drop you at the safari office. Nagarhole requires navigating different side routes depending on which zone you visit.

What are the main differences at a glance?

The parks differ primarily in vegetation type and safari modes.

Both parks ban private vehicles on safari routes. You must use official forest department vehicles. Here is how the key features compare.

Which park has more tigers?

Both parks share one of the densest populations of Bengal tigers in India.

The animals move freely between Bandipur, Nagarhole, and surrounding reserves. This creates an 874-square-kilometer contiguous block on the Bandipur side alone. Your chances of seeing Bengal tigers and Asian elephants are excellent in both locations.

Choose Bandipur for easy highway access and clear sightlines during dry months.

Pick Nagarhole if you specifically want a boat safari and prefer a dense jungle setting. If you have time, book a land safari in Bandipur and add a boat safari on the Kabini side.
